Student Absences

In order for students to achieve success it is crucial that they attend school. According to the Department for Education, if a student is absent for:

  • 5 or more days for any reason in a term, this is classified as having habitual non-attendance issues
  • 10 or more days for any reason in a term, this is classified as having chronic non-attendance issues

To support students to achieve their best, Modbury High School has incorporated increased student attendance as a target in our site improvement plan.

The school aims to achieve a 95% attendance rate for students throughout the academic year and all members of the school community, staff, students and parents/guardians have responsibilities to fulfil this.  Our attendance policy outlines everyone’s roles and responsibilities.

Reporting student absences

Parents/Caregivers must contact the school before 8.45am each day the student is absent to explain the absence.

Parents/Caregivers can let us know by any of these options:

Provide a written note in the student’s diary on the first day back from an absence to validate the phone messages.

Provide a doctor’s certificate that covers all the days a student has been absent if the absence is in a block of three or more consecutive days.
